The Bryker Woods pipe repair project involved preparing a preliminary engineering report to evaluate repair and rehabilitation alternatives for the 54-inch/36-inch prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) transmission mains. Halff recommended joint replacements for the 36-inch transmission main and a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) to rehabilitate the damaged portions of the 54-inch transmission main. This repair method works by applying sheets of carbon fiber reinforced polymer to the internal walls of an entire pipe joint. The cured CFRP forms a resilient structure and can act as a stand-alone pipe. This was the City of Austin’s first project using CFRP for joint repair, and Halff’s scope of work included the preparation of the City’s first Internal Pipe Repair Specification.
